NovelSense is part of one of Europes biggest funding projects to improve air quality. The DEUS Smart Air project aims to develop a sensor grid which enables cities and municipalities to monitor air pollution and traffic flow to actively improve air quality. The sensor grid is made up of mobile and stationary sensors which cover a wide range of measurements. This includes features like weather, noise, dust, NO2 and NH3. DEUS provides a adaptive modular system which integrates theses sensor modalities into a product-service system ready for the street.
Within the consortium, NovelSense is working on integrating the ABAKUS sensor system. This camera based sensor uses state-of-the-art camera technology to monitor traffic flows. NovelSense leverages their capabilities in the edge AI space to enable an on-device perception which minimizes hardware requirements. Therefore the ABAKUS is able to run all perception tasks on the edge without heavily increasing the energy consumption of the DEUS system. This makes the DEUS a perfect retrofit solution.
During the project, NovelSense will install over 20 ABAKUS systems in cooperation with smart cities in Germany. This will enable the company to further develop and improve the traffic detection system. The 4 Million Euro project started at the end of 2020 and will run until November 2023. DEUS Smart Air is financed by the German Ministry for Digital and Transport.
